Are you an Engineering graduate passionate about Edge Computing, Distributed AI, and Smart Farming? The Next Generation Networks and Services Group (GRyS), within the Department of Telematics and Electronic Engineering at the Technical University of Madrid (ETSIST-UPM), is seeking a First Stage Researcher (R1) to join the AFarEdge Project – Aggregated Intelligence for Farming at the Edge.

- Contract Type: Open-ended (Scientific-Technical Activities, Art. 23.bis Ley de la Ciencia)
- Working Hours: 37.5 hours/week (Full-time)
- Gross Annual Salary: €41,300

🧠 Main Tasks
- Edge AI Architecture Development: Contributing to the specification and development of an Edge Computing architecture to enable edge AI and distributed learning.
- Semantic Middleware Integration: Participating in the specification and development of a semantic middleware layer to integrate heterogeneous devices and diverse data models.
- Edge Deployment Automation: Collaborating on the design and development of components that facilitate edge solution deployment through MLOps and DevOps approaches.
- Scientific Dissemination and Documentation: Supporting the drafting of technical reports and scientific articles on project progress.
- International Collaboration: Actively participating in working meetings and coordination with European consortium partners.
🎓 Requirements
- Master’s degree in Engineering (ICT).
- Strong knowledge of AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning models, with background in Federated Learning highly desirable.
- Proven knowledge and experience in developing Edge Computing applications and architectures.
- Proficiency in microservices architectures, containerization (Docker), and open-source CI/CD workflows (DevOps/MLOps).
- Understanding of data models, ontologies, and knowledge representation languages.
- Experience with communication protocols (REST, gRPC, MQTT) and full-stack development (databases, object storage, real-time dashboards) for monitoring distributed deployments.
- Experience in system modeling, simulation, and verification/validation testing aligned with standards such as ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119.
- Fluent spoken English for presentations and meetings, alongside strong skills in drafting formal and academic technical documentation.
- Candidates currently enrolled in a PhD in Engineering will be highly valued.
- Demonstrated ability to work on applied research combining software and AI for real-world deployments.
- Capacity to collaborate in multidisciplinary environments and with international research teams.
- Languages: Spanish (Advanced), English (Intermediate).
