About GRyS

GRyS (Next-Generation Networks and Services) is a research group at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) dedicated to exploring, designing, and developing the technologies that will define the connected systems of tomorrow.

We work at the intersection of cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), cooperative robotics, and distributed software architectures — seeking to make complex systems more intelligent, adaptive, and resilient.

Our members bring together a rich mix of experience and curiosity. GRyS is a space where seasoned researchers and emerging scholars collaborate, combining solid academic grounding with the flexibility and creativity needed to tackle today’s technological challenges.

GRyS Team (2023)

Mission

To advance the understanding and development of next-generation networked and intelligent systems, bridging the gap between research and practice through innovation, collaboration, and openness.

We aim to produce not only excellent scientific outcomes but also technological solutions that contribute to society, enhance sustainability, and enable new forms of digital interaction.

Vision

We envision a world where connected systems work seamlessly, responsibly, and sustainably, empowering people and organizations to make better decisions and live more connected, efficient, and meaningful lives.

As part of UPM’s research ecosystem, GRyS seeks to be recognized as a reference group in cyber-physical and networked systems, fostering impactful collaborations and open research that transcends disciplinary boundaries.

Values

  • Collaboration — We believe in the power of shared knowledge and interdisciplinary work.
  • Openness — We embrace open science, open technology, and open dialogue.
  • Integrity — Our research is grounded in scientific rigor, transparency, and ethical commitment.
  • Innovation — We look for creative ways to address emerging challenges and societal needs.
  • Responsibility — We align our research with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aim for technology that serves people and the planet.

Our Story

GRyS has been a research group at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid since 2009 (consolidated in 2011), growing within the School of Telecommunications Systems and Engineering (ETSIST) as a multidisciplinary team focused on the design and evolution of advanced communication and computing systems.

From the beginning, our ambition has been to understand how distributed systems could become more efficient, adaptive, and intelligent — long before the term cyber-physical systems became widely used. Over the years, we have kept this same spirit while embracing emerging technologies that expand our scope: the Internet of Things, cooperative robotics, semantic middleware, and cloud–edge computing.

This continuous evolution has allowed us to take part in — and lead — major European research initiatives, including the H2020 SWARMs and AFarCloud projects, both of which embodied our vision of large-scale, intelligent, and cooperative networked systems applied to real-world challenges.

Rather than following trends, GRyS has evolved by anticipating change — adapting to new paradigms while remaining faithful to our central idea: that connectivity, intelligence, and collaboration between systems and people are at the heart of technological progress.

Looking Ahead

We continue to expand our collaborations through the OpenTech Lab, our space for applied experimentation and open technological development.
With new challenges on the horizon — from sustainability to AI-driven systems — GRyS remains committed to connecting knowledge, innovation, and people.
